Percutaneous Disc Decompression (Pain Management Procedure)

Headed by Dr. Hemaxi Ambani

Percutaneous disc decompression is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat spinal disc problems such as herniation and degeneration. Unlike traditional open surgery, percutaneous disc decompression involves making small incisions and using specialized tools to remove or shrink the damaged portion of the disc, relieving pressure on the nerves and reducing pain.

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

1. Patient Preparation:

  • Before the procedure, the patient is positioned comfortably on an operating table.
  • Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area where the procedure will be performed.
  • 2. Imaging Guidance:

  • Fluoroscopy or other imaging techniques are used to guide the procedure.
  • This ensures precise placement of the instruments and targeted treatment of the affected disc.
  • 3. Needle Placement:

  • A thin needle is inserted through the skin and guided towards the affected disc under fluoroscopic guidance.
  • The needle is carefully positioned to reach the center of the disc where the problem lies.
  • 4. Nucleoplasty or Discectomy:

  • Once the needle is properly placed, specialized instruments are inserted through it.
  • Nucleoplasty: A device called a nucleoplasty wand is used to create channels within the disc and remove tissue, reducing its size and relieving pressure on the nerves.
  • Discectomy: Alternatively, a tiny cutting instrument is used to remove a small portion of the damaged disc material, reducing pressure on the nerves.
  • BENEFITS OF PERCUTANEOUS DISC DECOMPRESSION

  • Minimally Invasive: Requires only small incisions, resulting in less tissue damage and faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery.
  • Reduced Risk: Lower risk of complications such as infection, blood loss, and nerve damage.
  • Outpatient Procedure: Often performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day.
  • Rapid Relief: Many patients experience immediate relief from symptoms such as pain, numbness, and tingling.
  • RECOVERY

  • Most patients can resume light activities within a few days after the procedure.
  • Full recovery typically takes several weeks, during which patients may be advised to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities.
  • Physical therapy may be recommended to strengthen the muscles supporting the spine and improve flexibility.
  • Percutaneous disc decompression is a highly effective treatment option for individuals suffering from spinal disc problems. By providing targeted relief without the need for major surgery, it offers patients a quicker recovery and improved quality of life. If you're experiencing symptoms of a herniated or degenerated disc, consult with a qualified spine specialist to determine if percutaneous disc decompression is right for you.
