Lumbar Sympathetic Block (Pain Management Procedure)

Headed by Dr. Hemaxi Ambani

What is a Lumbar Sympathetic Block?

A lumbar sympathetic plexus block involves injecting a local anesthetic around the sympathetic nerves located alongside the spine. These nerves are part of the sympathetic nervous system, responsible for regulating functions like blood flow to the extremities. By blocking these nerves, pain signals from tissues to the spinal cord can be interrupted.

Am I a candidate for a Lumbar Sympathetic Plexus Block?

This procedure is typically used to treat conditions like Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or Causalgia, which cause severe leg or foot pain due to trauma or surgery. Blocking the sympathetic plexus can reduce pain, swelling, and abnormal changes in the affected limb, potentially improving mobility.

How long does the procedure take?

The actual injection typical takes about 10 minutes.

What is injected?

The injection typically contains a local anesthetic and a steroid.

Where is the procedure performed?

It is usually performed in an office or surgical suite using fluoroscopy (a type of X-ray).

How is the procedure performed?

First, an IV may be started to administer sedating medication for comfort. The doctor identifies the injection area using the X-ray machine and administers local numbing medication (Lidocaine). The needle is guided using X-ray along the vertebral body, and its position is confirmed with contrast dye and X-ray images. The therapeutic solution is then injected.

What if I am Afraid of Needles?

Patients with needle phobia often do well with sedation to help them relax. They may have little to no memory of the procedure.

Is It Painful?

Generally, no. The doctor takes steps to minimize discomfort, which may include sedation and using numbing medication (Lidocaine).

What are the Risks and Side Effects?

While generally safe, there are potential risks, including temporary pain at the injection site, bleeding, infection, spinal block, epidural block, and inadvertent injection into blood vessels or surrounding organs.

How Many Lumbar Sympathetic Plexus Blocks Do I Need?

If the initial injection is effective, repeated injections may be beneficial. Typically, a series of injections is required, but patient response varies.

How Long Does the Medication Last?

The response varies, but typically the degree and duration of relief increase with each additional injection.

What Can I Expect Following the Injection?

Some soreness at the injection site is common. Red-tinged urine may occur, which is usually normal. Most people can return to work the following day.
